Cancer survival rates 2025. Progress and challenges

Chart showing UK cancer survival rates 2025

UK cancer survival rates 2025 shows that survival has almost doubled since the 1970s.
over the last five decades, but delays in diagnosis and treatment are slowing further progress.
A study published by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and reported by
Sky News, analysed trends from 1971 to 2018 and found that the Cancer Survival Index
almost doubled from 23.7% to 49.8%. Encouraging improvements in survival.

The data shows remarkable progress for some cancers. Testicular cancer, for example, now has
a ten year survival rate of 97%, while breast cancer survival has reached 76.6%.
Cervical cancer and bowel cancer also saw major improvements, with survival rates of 63.5% and
53.9% respectively.

Screening programmes and advances in treatment have played a vital role in these improvements.
For patients and families, these numbers reflect hope and the benefits of early detection.

Challenges for more deadly cancers

Despite the progress, survival rates for cancers such as pancreatic, lung, stomach, and brain
remain much lower. Pancreatic cancer survival, for example, stands at just 4.3%.
For these patients, advances have been slow and meaningful change is still urgently needed.

Experts warn that delays in diagnosis and access to treatment are holding back further progress.
The slowdown in improvements highlights the importance of early detection, timely intervention,
and comprehensive health assessments.
